Blackworms and European nightcrawlers are both sold as live food, but they are not interchangeable packages. Blackworms are small aquatic worms. European nightcrawlers are earthworms kept in suitable moist bedding. Choose around your animal's prey size and your ability to store the food correctly.
Compare the handling requirements

| Portion planning | Small rinsed feeding portions | Whole or appropriately portioned worms for suitable animals |
| Our subscription packs | Four weights from 1/4 lb to 1 lb | 48, 96, 150 or 200 count |

Start with the animal, not the worm
An animal that can eat tiny aquatic prey may not be able to manage an earthworm. A larger worm-eating animal may be easier to feed with an appropriately sized nightcrawler portion. Do not assume that every fish, amphibian or turtle should receive either food. Confirm the feeding needs of your exact species and life stage.
For axolotl-specific context, our existing axolotl feeding guide discusses different foods and appropriate portion sizes. For other animals, start with the feeding guide directory.
Match the storage space you actually have
Blackworm storage involves checking and refreshing the holding water according to the care instructions. European nightcrawlers need their own bedding routine. A food that is convenient to feed may still be a poor purchase if you cannot provide its holding conditions.
Keep the two systems and their tools clearly identified. Do not transfer earthworm-bin supplements into a blackworm container simply because both products use the word “worm.” Likewise, a shallow water container for blackworms is not a nightcrawler bin.
Compare packs on the same basis
A pound of blackworms and a count pack of nightcrawlers cannot be compared by label alone. Ask how many suitable feeding sessions each purchase supports, how much will remain usable and what maintenance it requires. Avoid invented worm-count conversions for a weight-based blackworm pack.
Check shipping separately
The products have different service arrangements. Two-day eligibility for European nightcrawlers does not mean you should choose two-day service for blackworms. Review the selected product's directions and the options shown at checkout, especially if you place a mixed order.
Compare live blackworm packs with the European nightcrawler subscription. Both should support an appropriate varied feeding plan, rather than a promise that one food supplies every nutritional need.
