Quick answer: Live blackworms are freshwater aquatic worms. A healthy blackworm does not drown simply because it is underwater. In a storage container, the bigger risks are warm, dirty, stagnant water and crowded worms. This guide covers short-term refrigerated storage for feeder blackworms, not a breeding culture.
Can blackworms drown?
Lumbriculus variegatus lives in freshwater. Researchers have studied how these worms respond to changes in dissolved oxygen, including low-oxygen conditions. That is why “drowning” is a misleading way to describe a failing batch. Water quality and oxygen availability still matter; the fact that blackworms tolerate low oxygen does not make a sealed, fouled container safe. See the published blackworm oxygen study.
What to do when your live blackworms arrive
- Open the package promptly and check the worms. A healthy portion should show movement when gently disturbed.
- Transfer the worms out of the shipping bag. Gently rinse through a fine mesh strainer using cool, dechlorinated water.
- Spread them in a clean, food-safe shallow container. Add just enough cool, dechlorinated water to cover them; avoid packing a large quantity into a deep, dense clump.
- Refrigerate the container. Keep it away from freezing areas and from food preparation surfaces; use a lid that does not seal it airtight.
- Check the container daily. Pour off cloudy water, rinse gently, replace with fresh cool dechlorinated water, and remove obvious debris or dead material.
These are care steps for holding live feeder worms. The exact time they stay healthy varies with shipment condition, stocking density, temperature and how consistently the water is refreshed.
Why use shallow water?
A shallow layer makes it easier to spread the worms, see whether the water has turned cloudy, and change it without leaving a compact mass in dirty water. It is a practical storage method, not a claim that a particular water depth alone determines survival. Use enough water to keep the worms submerged.
What if the water smells bad or the worms stop moving?
Cloudy or foul-smelling water and a large amount of unresponsive material are signs to inspect the batch immediately. Remove obvious dead material and replace the water. If the remaining worms are deteriorating, do not feed that material to your animals. Contact the seller promptly if your shipment arrives in poor condition.
Before feeding fish or axolotls
Take out only the amount you plan to feed, rinse it with cool dechlorinated water, and keep the shipping and storage water out of the aquarium. Offer a modest portion and remove leftovers to protect tank water quality. For axolotls, see our blackworm feeding guide.
